SOUTH was a gallery run by Simon Barney & Chris Fortescue from 1997-1999. As an early project, Pin was an undetermined experiment in group work that invited over sixty artists to come and press dressmaker’s pins into the walls for a number of weeks. The radical, cross-generational mix-up of participants was something of a hallmark of the SOUTH program and it was here that I found a community of peers broader than those I’d been to college with. For this and the famous “gone fishing” professionalism, Pin and SOUTH hold fast as personally influential projects to have participated in.
